Data Spotlight #5

As dedicated data curators, we’re excited to showcase curated data collections that will hopefully ignite your research interests. Today we present you:

Thematic Data Collection on Gender & Diversity

Gender and diversity research is a comparatively young, interdisciplinary field of research that has been generating increasing attention for years. It deals with socially highly relevant questions about the construction and the relationship of gender and sexuality and about existing ways of dealing with diversity in a society, which have far-reaching implications for social and political coexistence. Our new thematic data collection, “Gender and Diversity,” contains a comprehensive selection of studies in this broad field of research. The studies address several topics, such as gender identity and sexuality, as well as gender roles in family, economy, and society. The studies included cover a large survey period and are both national and international in scope.

Noteworthy studies in this collection include the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) survey on Family and Changing Gender Roles. This ISSP module is a cross-national trend survey on gender-related issues such as attitudes towards women’s employment and intrafamilial division of care- and housework, which was conducted in 1988, 1994, 2002, and 2012. Another highlight of the data collection is the comparative EU-LGBTI-II survey from 2019 that provides extensive insights into the experiences of discrimination and harassment of LGBTI people in various areas of life, such as employment, education, or healthcare. Finally, the GESIS Panel contains various survey modules on gender-related issues, including an experimental study on how to ask about sex and gender in general population surveys.
