Data Spotlight #3

As dedicated data curators, we’re excited to showcase curated data collections that will hopefully ignite your research interests. Today we present you:

Thematic data collection on foreign and security policy
Almost two years after the military invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, the extent to which the military conflict has changed German attitudes towards foreign and security policy is being debated in Germany. In his government statement on February 27, 2022, Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of a turning point in German security policy, which included an increase in military spending and a refocusing of the Bundeswehr’s strategic tasks on national and alliance defense.
GESIS has compiled a thematic collection on foreign and security policy to aid researchers in gaining insights into public opinion about security and military issues. The collection brings together exclusive data from the GESIS archive, including current studies by the Press and Information Office of the German Federal Government on the role of the European Union and Germany as actors in foreign and security policy, on international organizations, and Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
A particular highlight are the regular trend surveys conducted by the Bundeswehr Center for Military History and Social Sciences. Since 1996, representative samples of Germans have been asked about their perception of the Bundeswehr and its foreign missions, their threat perceptions, and their attitudes toward foreign and security policy issues. Additionally, the panel of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) provides unique longitudinal data on public opinion before and after the invasion of Ukraine.
